The first thing to note is that 1" thick sound absorbers WILL NOT provide the best results, not enough absorption in the midbass and LF, so relatively too much in the mids and highs.

I copy down below the URL for my DIY Acoustic Treatment note, I suggest that you read it through, note the thicknesses, and the size of the panels, recommended locations, etc.

This same note also has info about DIY bass traps, which may or may not be of interest. However, most people underestimate the need for a balance of bass damping/absorption and mid and HF absorption.
