Hi Craig. I just finished this rack last week. I went to Menards (a Midwest home improvement store) and bought a couple of 5' x 2' x 1-3/8" oak butcher block panels at $55 per. 4, 1-3/4" x 5' poplar dowels. I glued and doweled the edges of each shelf with solid oak. I then cut the holes in the shelves with a 1-3/4" hole saw, routed the egdes, sanded, raise the grain, sanded some more... Next, I stained the oak shelves "traditional pecan", and the dowels black. The reason for the different color is because the oak and poplar take stain very differently. I opened the black stain (do NOT shake first) and dumped out most of it, then used only the sludge on the bottom of the can - this will give you a very dark, one pass finish. For sealing finish with a poly-urathane finish of your choosing. For assembly I used my dowel centering jig (about $25) and drilled 3/8" holes 4-1/2" deep into the shelf sides, through the (posts) dowels, and back into the shelves. A little Titebond glue and some 3/8" dowels - WaLa. I have a rack consisting of solid 1-3/8" oak that should last a few generations. Good luck to you. P.S. The screen door turnbuckle seen on the back was just there to keep everything stright & square while the glue set-up.
