Two designs I made (sorry...long)

welded by a local farm repair welding shop. Sorry, the 3 shelf is a pretty lousy pic, but I think you can see pretty much what I'd done.

Jeezo, I have to take new pics...these are BAAAAAD!

Anyway, with the 3 shelf, you can see the speaker stands I originally designed for a pair of Mirage 750's. The 3 shelf is made from heavy gauge 1" square tubing a friend gave me about 30' of when the factory he worked at closed...without that gift, the welded rack would have cost me far more than $250. The shelves were originally MDF, but slowly all are being replaced with 2 or 3" maple boards...some sourced from an old work-shop table.

The speaker stands are 1/4" steel plate with 3X5 steel tube from a "dub-wide" manufacturer here in town...they cost me $75 to make.

The 8 shelf rack is 1" steel square tubes originally with MDF and it too is slowly getting all wood shelves...I use 3" man-made slate slabs on one or two of the shelves, sand boxes under the Monarchy amps and VPI turntable. It cost me $250, the welder's materials! There are 1" wide X 1/4" thick "straps" welded across every one of the 8 shelves of the rack.

I've sprayed all shelves with spray paint supposedly designed (who knows for sure other than the Shadow) for sound damping characteristics.

I'd like to build a 4 shelf, but my welder finally got wise and wants $400 for the design I gave to him.

Adding different spikes under shelves and also some compliant polymer "thangs" I've picked up, all three haven't cost me $1000. Each of those racks and the speaker stands too, could support a house...he did a great welding job on all of them.

Even if you don't live in a rural area, there are welding shops everywhere. If you make the effort to call and drive to different builders, you can get all sorts of shelving materials...kitchen designers break their counters all the time and just toss out the scraps...some are really nice...I had two long pieces of green granite, too long for the 8 shelf so I gave them to a friend...that shelving material would cost a fortune, I got it for free.

You can build a rack that "wows" anyone (most importantly yourself) seeing it especially if you have some of your own tools to "pretty up" the welds, etc. Depending upon your flooring, you can have flat bottoms for feet (make sure ends are closed with a square of steel), or drill through those ends and put spikes on them. My floor is concrete, everything is spiked.

I believe I've done a reasonably good job of support and isolation...if I could get it done, anyone can. Make sure you have access to a pick up truck, however. Try as much as I could and they wouldn't fly from the welder's to my house!

Oh ya, wooden knobs on Cary preamp are made by Thingamaknobs. Nice, 'ey?
