RE: What Ever Happened To Water Filled Speaker Cable? [nt]

I do not recall any water filled cables. In the early 80's, Hitachi made an experimental cable consisting of a mercury filled plastic tube.

I do believe the cable company you are thinking of is Purist Audio, still in business in the Texas-Houston area, IIRC.

Their cables use a fluid surrounding the actual conductors, but it is obvious not water, which would cause corrosion on the bare conductors, not to mention develop algae and other unpleasantries over time. I believe they use a silicone based fluid which is much more stable. In addition, careful examination of the cable (i.e. through the sleeving) reveals that they mix in particulates. Some are nondescript dark in appearance; some are shiny and copper colored. I believe they use a mixture of copper based and ferrite material, but of course the composition is kept secret.

The cables are on the warm side of tonality, but quite decent. The main quibble I had was that every time you moved the cable, the particulates would move and thus the sound would change, sometimes taking weeks to settle down again. Purist Audio did come out with a "break in CD" which cures much of this annoying characteristic, and it also works well with any system or cable.
