First, he uses mostly that ubiquitous black plastic type of project box, albeit a slimmer design. That appears to me to be the usual ABS. His larger filters use a grayish box which could be ABS or PVC.
Second, I'm using crystals in a variety of "containers". Saran Wrap inside plugs, freezer bags, ABS boxes from Radio Shack, clear plastic, and even aluminum. All seem to work the same as in the original boxes to my ears in my system.
