High frequency noise is carried in on the AC wires and exists as radio waves in the air. No matter how good a filter box may be at blocking noise on the wires, it cannot stop the radiated noise from affecting the wiring between the box and the audio components. There will also be noise generated by components that gets to other components fed from the same outlet on the filter box.
Many choke users have found greater benefit from placing the choke as close as possible to the component power inlet. Alan Maher even recommended using a power tap (IEC mail to IEC female with a standard female outlet on a pigtail) to connect the choke to the cord and IEC inlet.
