I would agree with your findings. The R1 made everything sound like hi-fi, not natural. It was vivid and I can see why some might enjoy the "sound"
In the end to each his own. The maestro outlets in my audio system work fine, a bit more open, and quite than the Porters, but I could live with either over the Telsa's or R1.
