When the first problem happened with the Parasound stuff, all those moons ago, it seemed to me like a problem with "static," but a local tech said in a dismissive tone, "That term doesn't really mean anything in this context, Dave." If I wiggled the relevant interconnect, I got a sound not unlike what I'd expect a static discharge to sound like if it were being sent down a speaker wire, and then the problem would be gone and un-repeatable until the next time it cropped up on its own.
Others have suggested that both this story and the current one could be indicative of contagious failure of equipment, the root-cause of which is likely to turn out to be insufficient earth-ground or excessive DC-offset, both of which can presumably be checked by a local electrician friend of mine.
