Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |

I'm wondering if my research costs - in money AND time - in arriving at a 'good blend' to a LP-less bass-midrange driver might not be lower - and more satisfying - going with a HP input filter on the tweeter amp?
We know the relevant output Z and input Z's fairly accurately, and that these are far more stable across the bandwidth / under real signal conditions - than the Z's at spkr level are.
I was considering a modern low Fs (~500z & lowQ) 91db/w (no padding R's) 25-28mm dome at first order off a single 'GOOD' cap - to replace the existing treble system*.
*A '70s Foster/x 35mm soft dome >94db/w, 8? watts - with xover -3db @3.5k, padded, Eq'd, and FS trapped, two air coils, laddered MF polycarb caps!!! It cascades to 3rd order PDQuickly, due to the very sharp \/ Fs notch at 1.1k!
I have an OOBand RC 1st order input filter on the treble amp, <200hz, to limit the bass getting to the HP only crossover, and it did sound a teeny bit cleaner! even with air coils and the padding R's etc.
Do I go for a -3db pint of 3.5 k or a good bit higher than that, say 4k, 5k, even 7K? AND, is there any way of varying the -3db point.
How valuable are premium parts in this kind of role, and can I still save money? See my signature block!
TIA of course!
