Hi.

The EMI/RFI noies emiitted by the switch mode power supply (SMPS), riding on the DC which powers the heaters, can go into the tube preamp signal paths via the heater-cathode inter-electrode capacitance.

That's why I've seen even Hi-end brandname SMPS add a RF ferrous suppressor ring moded on to the O/P DC cord.

Here what I have done:-

The heaters of my phonostage is powered by PURE DC from 6AH sealed lead acid cell, charged by a SMPS. I custom built it so that when the phonostage is being powered by the SLA cell, the SMPS is swithced off & TOTALLY electrically detached from the pre-amp.

So the risk of RF rash, even via teh chassis grounding, is eliminated.
