repost from amp asylum -- hum, possible ground loop?

Hi all, i think I've done my reading here, but here goes...
I made my own subwoofer with a "buyout plate amp" from MCM. It seems to be poorly grounded inside, since whenever plugged in it hums. Main amp is NAD 3020, using preamp in/out loop to/from the amp. Hum goes away when I disconnect the RCAs from sub to NAD. But, hum remains when I unplug all sources. Ground loop isolator fixed it but the sound was crap (even my wife pointed this out, I'm not making it up!) -- is this a ground loop and if so, how else can I fix it? All components are 2-prong, there is no cable TV. I was reading an article on Rane that suggests using balanced cables with one side of the shield disconnected?
