I know you are hesitant about using air bladder devices, but Arcici makes air bladder bases called AirHeads. They hold the air for a long time and can handle uneven weight distribution well because of using 3 separate bladders. When set up, the platform moves vertically but does not sway sideways.They have brass tire valves with caps that can face to the front and they also sell a hand pump. Leveling is accomplished by inflating each bladder to achieve a uniform gap between the top and the base. Prices start around $400.
