... if you make the top piece a little larger you can add a trim to conceal all the layers. What you want is for it to not touch any of the lower sections.
If it was all made from MDF it could be sprayed for a neat finish.
I have some made up and veneered and that was very cheap.
If you had a friend with a woodworking hobby, I am sure he/she could turn one out for a very good price.
