The idea is to have smaller caps handle a smaller range therefore being more responsive. The ideal is supposed to be original cap bypassed by a cap 10% of the value of the original. Then you may bypass the bypass cap with a cap that has a 10% value of the bypass cap; and so on; and so on.I have heard results bypassing 10,000 MFD caps with 5 MFD polypropylenes. In answer to your question you won't hurt anything by adding the 220 MFD back in the circuit. You may (or may not) hear a fuller bass.
Based on my experience, you may hear subtle changes in the sound with the addition of each bypass capacitor.
