DIY (mostly) Isolation Platform
I posted this yesterday as a reply but thought it might have merit as it's own topic. After some Asylum searches and some research, I decided to try a combination of materials for a mostly DIY isolation platform. For about $200 I am very pleased with the results.
Granite, marble and most stone types ring. Ringing is bad. Glass and most metals also ring. Materials that are acoustically dead are the best. A composite of more than one of these "dead" materials is even better.
The platform (19" x 13") is a composite of 4 "dead" materials in 7 layers. It is plexiglas, butyl rubber, aluminium, mdf, aluminium, butyl rubber, plexiglas.
The composite platform rides on 3 bearing blocks. I purchased commercially made bearing blocks.
On top of the platform are 4 Sorbothane footers. My CDP rides on these. On top of the CDP I have bags of #6 lead shot.
Isolation, damping, and mass loading.
The butyl rubber and aluminium came together as an adhesive sheet called V-MAX, used for vibration and sound damping of ducts and machine covers.
Plexiglas 2 x $12
Butyl rubber and aluminium sheets 2 x $14 plus S&H
3/4" MDF $9 (for 1/4 sheet)
FIM bearing blocks 3 for $89 plus S&H
Sorbothane footers 4 x $6 plus S&H
Lead shot $9
Spray adhesive $7I did not put sources because I wasn't sure about Asylum rules. If anybody wants sources, just ask and I'll post.
Also very pleased with DIY Bass Tube Traps made from Knauf pipe insulation, 3/4" plywood and cotton quilt batting. Ears and SPL meter readings verified effectiveness.
