Re: Congrats!

I used 18ga only because there was no other choice that I could find. There are lots of copper hookup wires available, but only VH Audio has OCC, and the only size he offers is 18ga. I used this wire for some braided speaker cables, and the results were equally rewarding. See my post from about a week ago.

If you can find smaller wire of equal quality, it might work even better than the 18ga in terms of high frequency transmission and workability, but be proportionally more fragile. Let me know if you find something.

I used Cardas silver solder, which is easier to melt than RS silver. I don't think the small amount of solder involved has much bearing on the end result, but I wanted to reduce all detractions as much as possible.

You can try enlarging the opening with a drill, but that will involve holding the round plug somehow and possibly making the hole too large. A hand held round file would work better than a drill, but take somewhat longer. The original opening is oval, and you should maintain some of that oval shape to get good clamping pressure. A Dremel is a very handy tool to have for lots of uses, and doesn't cost that much. If you build a pair of cables for a few dollars that work better than ones you might have spent $400 or $500 for, then you're still way ahead.

If you build a pair, please let us know the results.

Peace,
Tom E
