I went and did a dumb thing

I thought my system sounded pretty good. The base was a little wooly and when it
bothered me i just tuned down the subwoofers.
After reading a lot of threads about room treatments and trueRTA I decided to take
the plunge and purchase the M-Audio USB PRE and the Behringer ECM8000 mic and a
license for tureRTA level 3. It took some doing but I got the drivers loaded and
TrueRTA calibrated and set about measuring my room response.
Things were pretty ugly at the bottom end and not bad from about 75hz to 12khz,then
a gentle rolloff to 20k. I cannot hear much above 12khz(ARPA member).
I was right about too much base and turned that down quite a bit to flaten that out.
But I have a large peak at 40hz (over 10db) and an even larger suckout at 50hz.
I know there is little i can do with the suckout from what I read, since this is due to the
room dimensions and I doubt the wife will allow me moving walls around!
I tamed the 40hz peak just a bit by pulling the speakers further out into the room.
But not much. It is amazing to watch on the laptop screen the effects of moving either
the speakers or the listening position. I will never doubt the members talking about
speaker position or room effects again.
I have Vandy 2Ce which are biamped with stero subs. By turning off various amps I can
see what each part of my system is doing. The majority of the 40hz peak is from the
Vandy woofers. The subs are crossed over at a low at (24db/octive) 40hz with my modified
Marchand electronic
crossover. I am within 1db of being flat to below 20hz.
I combined the XM9 board with the WM8 BASSIS board (two sets, one for each channel).
This has allowed me by adjusting the "Q" to achieve sub 20hz response.
Now to my questions to room treatment gurus out there.
Will a bass trap work and can it be tunes to 40hz?
The other thing I did not mention is that the coners behind the speakers or truncated.
This may be good or not I do not know, but I do not have the proverbial corner to put
the base traps in.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated
Thanks in advance....Paul

So it goes.........
