Re: Power filtration through using 220/110V step down transformer? True or not...

Gordan-

I have to use a step up/down for my entire system. In my experience, step transformers add huge amounts of harmonic noise that need to be filtered. They do nothing for isolation or harmonic filtering. I have to use a Plitron NBT isolation transformer after the step to begin the filter out the noise. Another thing to keep in mind is that steps are very sensitive to voltage swings. The one I use only has a +/-2v before mechanical vibration can be heard across the room. I had to build a internal shock mount to lower the vibration of the transformer against the chassis noise. I also do a lot of EMF filtering on the primary to lower the odd harmonics caused by the voltage swing. My best advice is stay away from them. They serve a purpose, but not in a/v.
