Re: Getting better power to our stereo's

Well thanks guys, I thinks ome of you are mis-informed about modern online UPS systems. Yes the cheap 400 or less units do use stepped or square wave's, they are noisy, and for the most part they aren't online. However modern ones use a system which produces a square wave and then sends it through a filter which modifies the shape to a true sinewave. I have seen for myself on an oscilliscope what the wave looks like, and it looks better than what is coming out of my wall. Also, the distortion, as in non-linear stuff, is lower.

The Elgar stuff is really better yet, the distortion is .2%, and the output is very pure. These devices were designed to feed sensitive test equipment with as pure a power as possible. They cost new in excess of 6,000 dollars, but used, especially from school, can go for much less. If you compare the cuircit, and I have a schematic, it is very similar to some very high end audiophile power conditioners selling for quite a bit of money. It uses an isolation transformer to offer complete isolation as well, as do most of the systems based on such a cuircit.

As for most of the audiophile stuff, I have taken apart my fair share of audiophile noise supressors, and been left wanting every time. Everything from highend monstercable, PS Audio Ultimate Outlets, and various lesser priced items. These use simple LC or LCR filters at best, and maybe an isolation or balanced power transformer. Thats it, and though that isn't bad, it doesn't offer the sort of improvement to power that something like the Elgar or propper regeneration could offer.

As for the outlet recomendation, thankyou but I have already done all of these sorts of tweaks. I have dedicated lines running to my stereo room with cryo treated Hubbel outlets. What got me on this quest was some recent work with uber power supplies for my DIY phonostages, and finding just how huge a difference they make. However I was always left wondering how much the power coming in was affecting my other equipment which either doesn't have such a good power supply, or because of current, just can't have that level of regulation and filtration. I mean, I can't put a Jung Super regulator on my amplifier.
