Burning in caps without burning out tubes?

I don't know if this is correct or not but ....

When I was building guitar tube amps, I was told that I could break in the new components by removing the power tubes and letting the amp "cook" with junk preamp tubes. Sounded like a great idea since nobody wants to ruin NOS tubes! I THINK it worked but I'm not positive. Blazing 100 watt distorted guitar amps aren't exactly "audiophile" in nature.

Can anyone comment on this? I've got some V-caps coming and I don't want to ruin some good tubes trying to reach the 400 hour burn in benchmark.
