Judging by the 24VDC U mention, I am leaning towards the first scenario and it could be that the electronic speed control circuit is "drifting" on U depending on input voltage which tends to "sag" in the daytime.
Yes TT motor speed controllers DO have a very positive effect on the speed stability of TT motors especially if they are AC synchronous types.
Also, U would get a MUCH better response if U posted your question over on the Vinyl Asylum.
