Remoter control advice needed

The remote control on my Marantz CD has stopped working.
The remote itself has no indicator lights on it and the transmitter light is almost certainly infra red.
Is there a clever way to check if the remote is working i.e. by holding it near a radio tuned to a certain frequency etc?
