Re: Mixing Mundorf and V-caps

You wrote, "I'm also assuming that the caps connected to the preamp tubes are more critical to the sound since they're directly in the signal path. Is this correct thinking?" This makes me wonder whether you have correctly identified the "coupling" caps you intend to replace with the Mundorfs. Coupling caps are generally connected from the plate of a voltage amplifier tube to whatever the next stage is. In a preamplifier, this might be a cathode-follower. Then also your preamp may be capacitor-coupled at its outputs. Are there caps directly soldered to the output jacks? One would need to know more about the circuit in order to answer your questions with any certainty, but in general I see no problem with mixing Mundorfs and Vcaps. However, since Vcaps are far more costly and since the coupling application is most critical to sound quality, why not use Vcaps for coupling? If there are caps soldered to the hot pins of the output jacks, they are probably of fairly high value, e.g., > or equal to 1.0uF, at least. Vcaps in those values would be very very expensive. So there you may well want to use Mundorfs. By the way, if the caps are used in ways I've described, they are both very much IN the signal path.
