Look inside the amp and be sure the input is terminated at a resistor. With power off and all the filter caps discharged (use a 10K power resistor to avoid damage to the caps), measure the resistance. You can find simple digital voltmeters at places like Sears for a few dollars. You want one that measures DC and AC volts and resistance, at a minimum. It is handy to have one that also measures capacitance and diode voltage if you are willing to spend a little more.
