wtf just happened ?!?!?!

67.169.169.117

for the last week i have been putting together a system for a friend of mine.

modded adcom gfa-535 for subs (mods were iec socket and bypassing speaker switches and replacing input wires and rca jacks with nicer stuff.)

unmodded mitsubishi m-a4200 for planars

marchand xm-1 active xovers being fed by batteries

portable philips cdp for source

system has been playing fine for days at low volume in the evenings and cranking sometimes during the day as i fine tuned the xover point.

today while the system was not playing but everything powered on i hear this kinda loud --pop-- from the right speaker subs and then hear a nasty little frying sound as i jumped to turn off the gfa-535. :(

1 of the 2 subs in the right speaker has a tiny bit of rub when pushed by hand but measures and plays fine even at pretty loud volume for a minute or so.

havent really pushed it yet so as it heats it may just get unplayable.

i used my little sonic-t (which powers my computer speakers) to test with.

i started taking dc offset measurements and heres what i got :

mitsubishi -2.2mv left channel and -1.3mv right channel

sonic-t -10.8 left channel and 134.2mv! right channel

adcom -30.0mv left channel and 3.7mv right channel

but its the right sub which got damaged driven by the adcom.

and the computer doesnt seem to have any issue with the sonic-t having 134.2mv dc offset.

and why do some measure + while others measure - ?

thanks.
