Yes, you can do what you propose.But a normal 480/249 by 240/120 single phase power transformer will work. Remember to derate by 50% and I advise twice as big of one as the load requires so four times the actual volt-amp load needed. Ask your electrician. They often have old ones they remove. Surprising what a case of Bud will get you:)
Wire the primary for 480VAC but feed it 240VAC. Wire the secondary for 240VAC but ground the X2/X3 junction. Take power from X1 and X4. Ground stays ground. I have had better luck with older transformers. GE has been good. New Acmes have terrible balance.
