Oh, I get it now.

I thought the cap was part of the impedance matching circuit for the transformer, but it's just there to protect from any DC input. I get it now! (I'm a little bit slow . . . . )

True, if you know that you don't have any DC coming in, you could remove the cap (or bypass it with straight wire) and you might hear an improvement. You could try to short the cap out with a piece of wire instead of desoldering it and making a jumper. If that makes a big difference, then you could remove the cap and solder the shorting wire in its place. You would just have to remember that the DAC is no longer protected from DC should you ever take it to a friends or use it elsewhere.

If you don't feel comfortable doing any of this, then go with your gut. Leave it alone and enjoy it as is. Thanks for the post . . . . now I wonder how many DACs have a DC protection cap . . . .
