Frank, i2s was designed to work from board to board traveling very short distances, not from box to box. Some have implemented box-to-box, but I've read it is critical to keep the length to a few inches. I'm no expert, but I have been through this mental exercise myself, and I think the best way to accomplish your goal is to purchase a usb-i2s board (just the module without dac) from Doede at DDDac and install it into your CD player and run the i2s from the receiver chip on this board a very short distance to your dac chip. This module accepts a USB input, hence you'll have a USB Dac with no spdif. However you end up doing it you'll need to defeat power to your current receiver chip (either by switching both the power and signal...difficult...or just simply by using the cd player with the usb input only.
