Re: Use extreme care with direct AC exposure!

"I would not do anything to filter line or neutral to ground. Dumping noise on to the ground seems to cause more trouble than any damping action benefit. BTW, I believe this is partly why common AC inlet filters give poor performance with audio."

Most buildings have horrible AC grounding systems to begin with. On top of that, most of these grounding systems are very old and have never had any maintenance performed on them. In effect, they are nothing more than a deception as to one thinking that they have an AC ground.

This is the reason that many AC ground based filters actually INCREASE the noise in a system. The filters themselves are not faulty, but the ground system that they rely upon to do their job efficiently is severely compromised. Since the noise can't be shunted to ground efficiently, it is redirected into the gear. I demonstrated this to a local audio dealer over 5 years ago. Needless to say, they were shocked and stunned when observing the results i obtained.

There are ways to get around this in product design, but most manufacturers don't want to spend the money to do things right. As such, it is up to the end user to start at the source i.e. their AC system and make sure that it is as good as it can be. Trying to use less than adequately designed filtration to band-aid a less than adequately designed / maintained AC system is nothing more than a waste of time and money. Sean
