you've been a great help in helping me with my decision.I shall do this in steps.
Get some tubes to specifically target the major room mode. (ASC)
Then add some real traps for broad band absorbtion (Real traps)
And then do some diffusion for ambience.(Auralex)It's going to be costly but as you all rightly said, if the foundation is wrong .. everything is a big compromise.
I am lucky, my speakers have built in room mode correction, i'll use this for fine tuning. I use the active JBL LSR6328P minitors mated with the JBL LSR6312SP sub. Superb stuff on vocals and heavy metal. Beautifully natural vocals and solar plexus punchy bass
