Hi,I agree with you completely here and op-amp types will not only vary in performance from circuit to circuit but performance is also governed by the power supply.
For example, Jon Risch pointed out the importance of power supply bypassing for the NE5534. I have also found the 5534 like many other op-amps benefits from high quality bypassing and the quality of the 5534 bypassing influences the overall sound quality.
The NE5534 has received some bad press over the years, largely I guess because it is such a "Jellybean" of an op-amp, can be made very cheaply and thus encourages replacement.
This said, for tweakers wanting to rip out the 5534 they might want to first consider how to optimize the 5534 rather than risking some mix match with a costlier alterative just because it looks better on paper and costs 10x the price.
