Tks to you and the others for your advice/comments.Since the rack would be placed in the corner of the room (but sitting a little further out with rectangular shelves), I don't think the issue of bass tones is going to be much different.
The shorting issue is an interesting point, but again, as you suggested, I will be sure to determine the deepest and widest dimensions (perhaps not the same component) before cutting any shelves and locating the third rear vertical support.
With open sides, access will be FAR better than my current set up, which is in a closed cabinet with a partially open back, so I'm not too concerned about access.
