Greg,This thread has been very interesting ... and it's come up before, so I'm kindof getting the feel there MUST be something in this "removing the metal idea".
What (bad things) do you think metal does to the electronic circuit? Is it the magnetic steel which the problem ... in which case, you could use stainless or aluminium? Or is it just anything conductive?
However, a nicely earthed metal case does inhibit RFI/EMI ... by using a wooden or perspex case you are exposing the delicate electronic circuits to "attack". So how do you deal with this?
(Incidentally, I know of a fellow who built a DIY amp and made a beautiful wooden case for it and coated the inside of the case with micro-thin silver foil - earthed - for RFI reasons!)
