Hi Mark,One of the great benefits of sand is that it can absorb a huge amount of energy without saturating. It also is massive which contributes to the ability to deflect various forms and sources of vibration. One of the key elements, however, is that the sand can absorb unwanted stored energy out of the component. For this to be done most effectively the top plate (which is between the component and the sand) must act as a conduit to transfer that energy as efficiently as possible out of the component and down into the sand. I would suggest that using a thick material (such as thick granite, thick stone or thick wood) creates a less efficient transfer of the unwanted stored energy. The thick material that rings or resonates can actually store and release the energy over a longer period of time which is not desirable. I have found that a thinner rather than thicker material is best. Of course the specific material employed is critical. Materials that have a tendency to ring or are resonant are not the best choices.
Best Regards,
