Re: DIY Tube Traps: A Sonic Metamorphosis (addendum)

Hi John,

Yes, we used a lot of traps. Our goal was full room treatment, addressing the fundamental room modes and their harmonics as well as the early reflection points.

Both my friend and I are fortunate to not only have sympathetic, music loving spouses but dedicated rooms to boot. Still, whatever design one chooses to use, using only 4 to 6 traps in a room will only partially address the room's needs. Granted, some treatment can be a lot better than none at all.

"If the Gale type traps are only hitting 60-75% the performance of an ASC or DIY animal fencing bass trap..."

I don't know who can say for sure exactly what percentage Jon Gale's traps achieve. I'm reminded of the old review of a certain turntable that said it was 964 times better than the competition.
I can say this: If Mr. Gale's design is only achieving 50%, heck let's make it 10%, as an experienced listener and one who has been involved in making records for more than three decades, I'm absolutely thrilled with what they've done for the performance of my system.

If I ever acquire the tools and the skills, I'll probably try to build some animal fencing traps too, just to hear what they can do. I have a feeling they're fabulous.

Happy Listening!
Barry
