Thank you so much for your informative reviews. Your web site was a pleasure to explore. I gotta like anyone who resembles my wonderful son-in-law! The CJ & ARC SP16 are no longer on my short list, though the Marsh P2000T & the LS8 (recommended by one fairly reliable source; neither has remote) still look interesting. Of course the BAT VK30 & ASL/DT "Twin Head" (sounds like a latrine, needs a new name) look most promising. The Head is a transformer-coupled tube pre, whose architecture has much to recommend. I definitely care about bass, as my VMPS RM40 TRTs are pretty powerful down to the low-mid 20s.
