Re: How do the NOS Philips 7581A compare to current producttion KT-66?

Blatzer,

Used both the Philips ECG 7581A and the MOV KT-66. Two different sounding tubes, to me. The 7581A puts out more juice, has very good bass, clean high notes, but a scooped out midrange. Clips "hard." More of a super 6L6GC tone.

The KT-66, at least the MOV, have a much better overall tone. Good midrange, maybe not the bass or power of the 7581A, but very good detail and tone. And the MOV's last and last.

I have Sylvania pink based 7581A in my Twin Fender. It puts out a raw 130 watts (Quad p-p AB1)---which when coupled to JBL D120F's can do some hearing damage. For guitar you must play cleanly and with the least amount of overrdirve distortion, to get the 7581A to sound good.

The MOV KT-66 tone best example is John Mayall with Eric Clapton's Bluesbreaker (Beano) album. Lots and lots of overdrive. The KT-66 can really be pushed and still sound good. Lots of overhead in both tubes. But, a warmer tone with the MOV's, in my opinion---the MOV KT-66 are one of the best power tubes ever made.
