A beam tetrode 6CA7 lacks the suppressor grid; there is no such thing as an EL34/6CA7 without the screens and either a beam forming element or a suppressor grid. EL34s are pentodes and by definition cannot lack these. You can use a 2 watt 100 ohm resistor and tie the screens to the plate, and I believe the suppressor is not normally connected anyway. The EL34 is the best non-triode for converting to use as a triode as it is very efficient and easy to drive. However, it is my firm opinion that a pentode should remain a pentode, just as horses should not be painted black and white to make zebras. This is an unpopular view; I used to think that triode strapping was great, but as I learned more about power supply design I realized that the reason many dislike pentodes is because they need a very "tight" DC supply to sound good. I'd do it right and get a TJ mesh 300B, or even a JJ 300B. Chris
