triode EL34 and true triodes

144.92.164.196

First: Does anyone have experience with a recently manufactured EL34 that is lacking the screen and supressor grids? I can't remember who was selling these, but I think it was a JJ tube where they intentionally left them out to create a triode el34.

Now its quite possible that these would not be any different sounding than a normal el34 that has g2,g3 connected to the anode. But then, they might.

I'm trying to decide if its worthwhile to move from a triode connected el34 (pp) to something like a sovtek 6b4g. There are some drawbacks to using a 6b4g, though (lower mu, larger grid bias, lower anode dissip., filament hum, 2x the price). And I would likely go from a class A output to class AB to get the same power output of ~15W. But I have read reports that the DHTs blow away triode connected el34s. What about these "true" triode el34s?
