Re: no more nos 6922s Anyone going back to transistors?

There are many fine transistor CD players. The qualities enjoyed and perceived by owners of tube CDPs are, IMHO, not necessarily the result of tube circuitry but rather the careful OEM design of the D/A converter EQ, and the upgrades to the power supply for the tube buffer amp in units modified to use tubes, as in the Ah! unit which, I believe is a Marantz. I'm not saying the tubes don't contribute, but the attention to detail and adherence to standards re power supply, D/A EQ, and proper execution of a low or no compromise design are paramount for good sound; similar care, lack of compromise, and attention to parts quality and proper design practice will result in excellent CDP sound regardless of the technology used in the final stage of a machine that, viewed as a block circuit diagram, has over 100 stages. The transport, semiconductors etc yada yada are far more important than the issue of the CDP having "toobze." Phono stages and microphone preamps, again IMHO, are the only devices where tubes are essential as they involve translation of mechanical energy into an electrical analog waveform-- a delicate process where overload and many other complex factors make tubes the only suitable device for true fidelity. BTW, check the dealers listed on the World Tube Audio Portal for 6DJ8 family tubes; this tube is not any where near the rarebird in Europe as in America; Telefunken <> bottom and Dutch Amperex sell for $30-$40 with guaranties from MachMat and others. The Ei/Yugo Elite is OK, but they make a far better ECC83/82 than a 6DJ8. I wouldn't put a $20 pair of tubes into the most critical part of my system, the source component. Chris
