Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Revised suggestions

Unfortunately the memory fades as we get older. I thought the MG-12s were bi-wire capable, but as they are not, you have more problems to overcome. What you've got are three good pieces of gear, none of which are a really great match for one another. Both Sonic Frontiers pieces are quite neutral, to say the least, and your Maggies have a somewhat tipped-up balance in most rooms. The combination that you have will probably not be very rewarding. And the SFS-40 is living on the edge of having enough power for the Maggies, again depending on your room and listening tastes. You could mod the Maggies for biwiring, but this is far from an easy mod, and of course, destroys any warranty you might have. Replacing the Line 1 with a tube pre would give you a good measure of what you're seeking, but might not be the ultimate solution either. I've heard several sets of the larger Maggies, all biwired, and I myself had a pair of 1.6s with an SFS-80 on the bass and a pair of Dynaco ST-70s on the panels. Fed by an ARC SP-10, the sound was breathtaking. I guess you should decide which gear you really want to keep, and then go from there. If you keep the SF gear you should probably be looking for a pair of speakers with at least medium sensitivity, perhaps 88+ db or so, and an overall "warmish" sound. If you're set on keeping the Maggies, look for an amp in the roughly 50 wpc and up category; maybe a Rogue or, if you really want the retro sound of tubes, a pair of Quicksilver Silver 60s would be sweet. All of this depends on what you like to hear, but unfortunately I don't think your current lineup has the kind of system synergy that's going to give you very "tube-like" sound. Different tubes/interconnects/speaker cables could improve the situation to some degree, but probably not to the degree that your apparently seeking. Sorry I'm not being more optimistic, but I think you need to do some auditioning to see which component you could replace to bring you a more synergistic match. Like I said, you've got good components there, but it's the COMBINATION of all the components that makes beautiful music. Good luck in your search. I've used just about all of your current gear in the past, or at least something very similar, so if I can be of any further assistance drop me an email. Best regards, Don
