Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Music Reference RM5 (opinions)

I've owned my RM5 Mark II for about a decade and it's been in constant use. It's very friendly with tubes (last a long time), quiet and the phono stage is great. I love this preamp. However, I would recommend looking at later versions of the preamp than the one I have. Here's why. Versions after mine have the RCA jacks changed and it allows much easier connection of interconnects. I also know that there's a switch now that can turn off the phono stage so you don't use up those tubes when listening to your line stage components - don' know if this came out in version 3 or 4.. The face plate of mine doesn't have an input labeled "CD" as it was designed before CD was popular. Version 3 has the "CD" label. This is a wonderful preamp. It uses 6922 tubes (3 of em) and those are a bit costly in NOS varieties unfortunately. There are new 6922 tubes available cheap however - JJ and Ei Elite come to mind. The sound of this preamp is dynamic and just makes good music. Stereophile gave this preamp a "B" grade in their recommended components and I still have the Guy Lemcoe review. If you're interesed in a copy, e-mail me with your address. The only problem I've had with my unit is the mute switch doesn't work as well as it used to. Sometimes in mute mode I still get sound out of my speakers.
