Hi,
Sounds like the main filter cap has gone bad. My Mk.III had that happen. Old cap, listening all morning and all of a sudden, a hum started and was way too loud to listen over. Shouldn't be too bad a fix, there are several options, a few of the sponsors can sell you the parts, one is a direct replacement 4-section cap and the other involves a new board with series connected lower voltage caps for something like a 7 or 800 v rating. If she's in State College, she should pay me and the wife ( and son ) a visit for repair...
