Hi - glad I found this site. I have a question on this silvery flashing as well. I bought some GZ34 metal based tubes recently, Phillips, from a distributor in Switzerland. I noticed that some of the tubes have a silver top, while others have a darker( burnt? ) flashing. When I plug in the GZ34 ( all new old stock )with the darker flashing, you can definitely see the filaments, plus pin holes , through the flashing when viewed from the top. On the tubes with a silver flashing, you can not.
Does this mean that some of the tubes are made better than the others? They all look like they have had heat at one point, possibly from the manufacturer burning in the tubes ( as I understand Phillips did with their miniwatt tubes ). I think these are from 1957. I don't think any of these were ever used, they are too mint looking ( pins, everything ).
Just curious - does thinner ( pin holes visible ) flashing, or the darker coating, mean less tube life?
