Re: popping noise

I had a similar experience with a heathkit aa-32. Suspects ranged from cold solder joints to bad socket connections to tubes; it was aggrivating as the movement of wiggling tubes (or changing/replacing them after examining under-chassis) would cause it as well as sometimes activating switches and also for "no apparent reason". Eventually the culpret was identified as a loose wiper on a tone control pot. Replaced the pot and problem solved. Point is that this is a symptom of a loose connection somewhere and the difficult part can be finding where. BTW, rotation of the offending control never produced the crackling noise (vibration elsewhere did), but a thorough examination revealed a wiggly center post on this pot and then when powered up I could tap the control knob and produce the noise; this is how I finally discovered it.
