Larry,The only way to know for sure is to try the Bugle Boys, in your system. Personally, I find the price of these a bit steep. But, the tone is find is certain units. I tend to like the Mullard tone. Or old Valvos or Miniwatts---of the Philips made ECC81's.
The last amp I used a Dutch Philips Miniwatt E81CC in the phase inverter stage. Boy, did this tube sound good. The amp was a transistional white/blonde Tolex Fender (late 50's) and the plate voltages and bias seemed to suit the Miniwatt to a tee.
My bet is that this Miniwatt is still cheaper than the Dutch BB Amperex ECC81. Just another variable to add to the equation.
The other great ECC81 type is (of course) the Telefunken. Nothing more needs to be said.
