Kevin,You can lengthen the wire just make sure the wire is rated to handle the appropriate temp and current of the power tranny. I would imagine that 18 or 20 guage teflon stranded wire would be okay. Also I'd use a terminal rather than solder to hook them together. Of course in a pinch you could slip some heat shrink over one of the wires, bend a hook in each wire, get a good mechanical connection, solder, then melt the heat shrink. Again a good terminal connection would probably be better.
The old choke's all leaked out the wax, but that doesn't mean it's bad by a longshot. Mine had a huge pile of goo under it but it still works fine. If it worries you a replacement choke is only $15 or $16 from Triode, I think.
Sounds like you still have a viable Dynaco 70......overhaul and enjoy.
