The 6550 is a rugged tube, but it is also a pricey one, and class A will cook them pretty quickly.The real question on a given amp is whether the power supply has enough oompah to support all that extra current on a continuous basis. If the PS was designed for use with a Class AB power stage, probably not.
The other factor would be the extra heat that would be generated, and whether the amp chassis, cabinet, and other circuitry could tolerate it.
