It will depend on the BRAND of 5963, not on the fact that it is a 5963. The 5963 is a variant of the 12au7 and will sub directly for it in every situation that I have heard of. There does not seem to be a "type" sound to it, although other variants might have that characteristic. I refer to the 5814, which in my experience with several brands of that type seems to be a "hotter" audio tube, more treble biased, but that may not be true in all applications of it.
