I have never heard a "hole" in good condition sound bad, but if you require a matched pair, then maybe just wait for the metal bases to arrive? Though they don't seem to do a "slow start" you might pick up a MP of current production Sovtek 5ar4's for backup tubes (if cost is a consideration), not that you will ever need them as the Mullard types last almost forever (with few exceptions). The new Sovtek's sound very nice, but I don't know how long they will last.The going rate for NOS "holes" is $60-$100US on up, so the price is reasonable. I just purchased a NOS GE/GT Britain yesterday (looks like a Mullard brown base, but does not have any etchings) for $20, which was a fluke. I do not require MP's though and have a use for singles like this.
